“Nobody Reads Your Crappy Blog”

The word "blog" has a lot of baggage associated with it. Even though there are plenty of amazing, intelligent, funny, informative blogs out there now, I think that for most people the word still denotes someone writing self-indulgently about the minutiae of their life.

When I started this website (back in April), I was focused on treating it like a column in a magazine; a regular weekly challenge of writing something interesting, useful, funny, or informative. Even though "self-produced online column" doesn't quite have the same ring to it, I still wanted to avoid the baggage of the word "blog" and everything it tends to stand for.

Of course, it doesn't always go that way. As per a conversation back in July with a friend...

Simon (typing on keyboard): Hang on, I just need to finish writing this before we go.

Friend: What are you writing?

Simon: Oh, just an article for... well, I'm not going to call it a blog because I'm not a fan of the word "blog". I'm writing for my website where I weekly post articles about thoughts and experiences that I think people will find interesting, entertaining or informative.

Friend: ...I can't wait to read your blog.

Sigh.
